Mental Breakdown: A 1,700HP Volkswagen Bus Dragster

Here's one Volkswagen Bus you wouldn't want to mess around with. It's called the Mental Breakdown and it's the creation of Wayne Allman from the British county of Warwickshire. Of the original 1965 VW model upon which it is based, only the driver's cabin was left intact. Power comes from an 8.4-liter supercharhed Keith Black V8 Hemi unit that runs on methanol and delivers 1,700bhp.

"I have always loved installing powerful engines in the wrong cars", says Allman who will show off the VW dragster model at this week's Essen Motor Show in Germany. Until the show goes live, check out at the photo gallery and a video from this year's test runs on the drag strip.

Porsche 911 Turbo Powered VW Bus: 0-100km/h In 5.1 sec!

This is by far the craziest VW Bus (Transporter) conversion that we’ve ever heard about. A company in Germany called “TH Automobile” is the one responsible for the VW – Porsche hybrid Transporter that’s fitted with a rear-mounted Porsche 911 Turbo derived 3.6-liter engine delivering 420 PS. But wait, that’s not the only thing that TH Automobile borrowed from Porsche; so is the all-wheel-drive system from the 996! And if that’s not enough, the German company can install a 150 PS VW turbodiesel engine up front, raising total output to 570 PS!

With the Porsche 911 Turbo engine alone, the AWD Transporter can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.1 seconds while top speed is in excess of 168 mph - 270 km/h. The conversion also includes 6-caliper rear brakes and a new suspension set up. -Continued after the jump

The Porsche-powered Transporter is available in two versions, the TH2 van and the TH3 4door pick-up truck that features an extended wheelbase (+50 cm). Both vehicles get minimum exterior changes that include new bumpers, a large grille and a set of new 20-inch light alloy wheels. Talk about the absolute “Q Car”… Inside, TH Automobile was a tad more aggressive adding a Porsche derived steering wheel, gearbox and instrument panel.

It all sounds nice until you hear the price: the TH2 Van conversion –not including the cost of the Transporter donor- starts at €145,000 or $213,300 while the TH3 Pickup (Transporter included) will set you back at €169,500 or $249,200!
